How to clean up an infected home computer virus ?

Notices come up that my home computer has been infected with a virus. I live in California and called a well known company called the Geek Squad. They said the fee would be about $200.00 to clear it up. Is that standard fee for home computer virus cleanup? Will pay it if I have to but seems high fee for this problem. Any other suggestions on how to clean up my computer. .

  1. Download avast from download.com, its free install it and schedule a boottime scan, that should take care of any virus on your pc
  2. Try this one AVG i use it on all my computers and it's free.
  3. try this online free scan from trend micro.. http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
  4. Geek Squad, sorry to say (a national company) is horrible. The average computer user can get free antivirus, do a simple scan and get rid of the virus in less than an hour or so. I like Avast Antivirus you can get it free at http://www.avast.com Hope this helps. If you do want a real company to do it though look around for local providers first. Frequently they're cheaper, more knowledgeable, and allow more of a personal experience with the customer.
